Macbeth

At the beginning of Macbeth we talked about how no one wanted to see the act they were committing. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth called upon the night multiple time so they wouldn't be able to see the murder they were committing. No one in the play has died with the light on, everyone has died alone in the dark in some horrible way.

I think this is important because it shows the consequences of someone actions if they don't really think it through enough. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth don't want to see their actions and just assume everything will be okay, its almost as if seeing the murder would make them realize the horrible deed they've just committed. Their whole country is going under and their surprised it is. I think this is just a lesson about how bad your life can get if you don't think about your actions.

Macbeth

Macbeth: “Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown, / And put a barren sceptre in my gripe.”

Macbeth is talking about how he has no children to inherit his thrown that hes basically given up his life, soul, and sanity for. He is realizing hes paved this new path for Banquos kids and is now noticing the huge fault in his plan. This line is foreshadowing his planning to murder Banquo and his family. This is a big part in the play because it shows how insane Macbeth is becoming, hes willing to kill even his own best friend.

Lady Macbeth:"Yet I do fear thy nature;
It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness
To catch the nearest way; thou wouldst be great,
Art not without ambition, but without
The illness should attend it.’

Lady Macbeth says this to Macbeth while persuading him to kill the king. She is saying she fears he wont be strong enough to commit the murder, and is basically telling him if he doesn't kill him hes just not a man. This quote is important because it gives readers an insight into Lady Macbeth's twisted mind, she is manipulating her nice husband and guilting him into murdering one of his friends just so that she can be queen and have the luxuries of being at the top of the Scottish Hierarchy.

Jazzfest

This past weekend I went to Jazzfest in New Orleans; It was my first real time going to a concert and I was really excited. Although I wasn't prepared for the amount of sun I would get I still had a great time. Jazzfest, as it was described to me by an older woman waiting for Vampire Weekend, is a melting pot of the worlds cultures squished into a hectic week to entertain the tourists. I liked this description because its true in more ways than you'd think, because whatever way you look at it we're all tourists.

The man I met from Zimbabwe was a tourist enjoying his short time in America, and I was just a tourist enjoying the culture he brought from his home. We all came to listen to music and to enjoy what everyone has to offer. No one started any fights, no one was hurt, because we were all there for the same reason, to be tourists in a different world even if we never really left home, and to enjoy each others company. In short I loved Jazzfest, I got to see some of my favorite bands like the Avett Brothers, Vampire Weekend, and Royal Teeth. I met new people I'll never forget and hopefully found a new tradition I can look forward to every year.

Response - If you are in a position of power, you are happy.

I agree with this statement but only when it comes to power over yourself, the ability to be confident in who you are and have the mental strength to be able to choose whats best for your well being. When you're the one in control of your life and feelings then I think that's when people are happiest, you're not second guessing yourself in fear that other people won't like your decision.

Response - Women are more compassionate and less violent than men.

I completely disagree with this. I believe all humans no matter what gender, are capable of the same amount of compassion. Gender has nothing to do with compassion or levels of violence, people just think that because of the certain gender rolls men and women are forced into. I have known men as violent as women, and women as compassionate as men. It all depends on the individual.

Walking Disaster

This song is about a lot of things, but as a whole, its about growing up and how terrible it is. During the first verse the writer uses end rhyme to emphasize a point hes making, which is how repetitive his life and relationship with his parents is. Its unchanging and its not necessarily a good thing.
I'm sure everything's the same:
Mom and Dad both in denial,
an only child to take the blame.

The writer uses symbolism to describe himself, saying "this city's buried in defeat", showing himself or his home as this huge part in his life that will forever be lost in the negative memories and failed attempts to change anything. This rhyming and symbolism makes me see this song as angry, despite the songs rather laid back (I say that loosely) sound. He uses blank verse to show an irregularity in the song, among the repetition he throws in a verse that symbolizes a change in his life that he has been trying to make.

Poetry

What is it?
The guitar strings I pluck to
sing with my soul.

Poetry is,
the bitter taste of loss
left when everyone's asleep.
The pain in my feet from walking barefoot
in the street.

Poetry is everything you and I
as a whole cannot say.
The unspoken words we left for other years
with belief that they
would be said another day.

Poetry is freedom
at first glance its crazy,
unorganized and only skin deep.
But poetry is life,
and my life is poetry I'm still writing.

Assonance
The pain in my feet from walking barefoot
in the street.

End Rhyme
The unspoken words we left for other years
with belief that they
would be said another day.

Metaphor
But poetry is life,
and my life is poetry I'm still writing.

Research draft

I feel confident about this draft, mostly because I put a lot of work into it and I think its well structured. I'm a bit concerned about how my paper is written overall, I'm not the best at following guidelines, so I'm kind of afraid I wrote it completely wrong and I'm going to get a bad grade (being honest). The easiest part was coming up with my argument, I felt very strongly about my topic so it wasn't hard to get the initial work done. The hardest part was researching, even though our class has been doing projects like this every year, I think we can all agree that the details are still fuzzy. I mean every year it gets more and more complicated and we haven't had time to adjust to even the smallest details, let alone tackle huge portions each week.

I feel like changing my information, my sources aren't present in each paragraph so I would like to change that and make my researched information more available. I would like help changing that, as I said earlier I'm not very skilled at following English guidelines, because there are always a lot of grey areas. I would like you to focus on my order of paragraphs and strength of my argument, or how it was written.

NHD topic

Well Dad, My NHD topic is mainly about the psychological impacts the Holocaust had on its victims and their families. I chose this topic because I've noticed that, unlike the actual events of the Holocaust, this topic isn't discussed nearly as much. The Holocaust survivors are widely known for their ability to conform and continue living in a normal society as if nothing happened. But from what I've learned the true effects of the Holocaust didn't show for about 40-50 years later, when they began to retire and live on their own. Once they weren't busy each day with work or kids, their minds started to show signs of PTSD, anxiety, depression and survivor guilt. Survivor guilt is the feeling that they shouldn't have lived, or the feeling that they must make sure everyone else is safe and happy, this guilt leads people to believe they'll never be able to fulfill their children needs and they distance themselves from their kids, family members, and friends.

My National History Day topic is focused on first and second generation psychological effects of the Holocaust. I chose this topic because I was appalled how unexplored it was. Most of the refugees who fled from Germany to other countries weren't given any financial or mental help. Unlike many reports on the events of the Holocaust, there is little discussion of the fact that the Holocaust had a major psychological impact on its victims and everyone they came in contact with on a regular basis. There are record amounts of mental illness in concentration camp inmates and their offspring. PTSD, anxiety, and depression is often passed down to children even if they had not experienced the genocide for themselves. Only in recent years have organizations been created for the sole purpose of preserving the mental stability of anyone affected by the events in Germany.

Human Nature

Human nature is who each of us truly are, some believe we are all just wild animals and in an extreme situation will revert back to our instincts, some think we are all naturally good, some think we are all naturally evil. I believe we are all canvas's, there is a base color for the rest of the world to color on and make its impressions but not all of our bases are the same color. What I mean by that is everyone is born with a preset personality, like angry or happy. But as we grow the world around us leaves impressions.

When were young there's nothing on our "canvas" so there's a lot of space for impressions to be made, and as we get older there's less and less space so were a lot less impressionable when were older. There is always going to be that original base that we were born with but over time it gets covered up, happy people can be exposed to something horrible and completely lose that happiness. I believe human nature is a blank slate, no one is born evil or good. It all depends on what we went through.

NHD topic

My NHD topic is the Holocaust, more specifically how it affected people. I'm focusing on how the events in Germany affected German citizens and other countries. I chose this view point for many reasons, I like psychology, its not as popular as other topics involving the Holocaust and I've never heard much about what people felt after it was all over. No one ever talks about the fear people felt, especially minorities, no one talks about how long it took before the horror of the Holocaust left peoples hearts and they could go back to living normal lives. Did family members hide their disabled relatives from the public in fear that they would be taken away? Did Jew's get as far away from Germany as they could, or did they stay in their home?

This topic is significant in terms of rights and responsibilities because its our responsibilities as humans to make sure others are okay. Whether that means opening up mental facilities to care for traumatized citizens, or charities to help those affected by the Holocaust get back on their feet. After the Holocaust ended many textbooks stop there, like after Hitler was dead and the rest of the Nazi's fled to unknown regions, everything was suddenly better. That's not true. My plan for this week is to research interviews with Holocaust survivors and see what life was like afterwords. I would also like to research what charity organizations helped anyone in need in that time.
